Cultivation in the New Year
Cultivation is the process of tilling or unsettling the soil in preparation for planting. Earth rich with nutrients, free from weeds, and properly aerated will provide the greatest return. Creating positive, sustainable change in life is analogous to growing a bountiful garden; preparing oneself just as the farmer prepares the land. As I set goals and intentions for the new year, I am first considering the soil in which I plant. Have I created an environment capable of nurturing the seeds of my hopes and aspirations? I have BIG plans for 2022. However, my initial focus this year is not on the goals themselves but instead on preparing fertile ground. Here’s my checklist:
1. BURN THE FIELD
Farmers have used this practice for 12,000 years to clear land from overgrowth and pests. The ashes left behind become the nutrients to support new growth. Eradicating existing relationships and habits that do not serve me provides space for new, healthy growth to flourish. The lessons I’ve learned from those experiences enrich me with insight and the wisdom needed for self-improvement.
2. GET SOME AIR IN THERE
Aeration provides oxygen to a plant’s roots and allows for drainage. I am learning the necessity of “breathing room” in my own life. Aerating my schedule with pockets of open time allows inspiration, creativity, and joy to permeate. It also means that I can allow the storms of life to wash through rather than drown me.
3. LET THE SUNSHINE IN
Light is the critical ingredient for photosynthesis that not only sustains the plants but is the basis for all life here on earth. I believe it is the light of faith and hope that fuels my soul and propels my life. I have faith that my life has a purpose and hope that it will be achieved.
